What is the best way to fight the European winter? A warm cozy winter jacket you’d say. But, once you’ve enjoyed a glass of Glühwein, you won’t be needing that jacket to keep you warm. This wine by far, is Germany’s favourite Christmas drink! And I’m not wrong in saying it is quite popular across Europe.
The Panettone is a tall, towering cake like bread enriched with rum-soaked dry fruits, almonds and candied peel, with origins in the city of Milan and enjoyed usually during Christmas, either as a dessert or as a breakfast treat.
The Stollen is Germany’s answer to the Fruit Cake. It is quite similar in preparation and ingredients but is more like a bread and less dense compared to the fruit cake.. The Christstollen has been around for centuries now. It is a yeasted bread baked with a mix of rum soaked dry fruits, nuts, spices and candied citrus peel.
The Christmas Cake / Fruit Cake are terms used interchangeably for a rich-moist sweet-spiced cake full of alcohol (Brandy/Cognac/Whiskey) soaked fruits like rasins, currants, sultanas and cherries. Traditionally this cake is made atleast 6 weeks before Christmas and fed regularly with the alcohol and cut on Christmas eve.
