Goad Pou (Sweetened Beaten-Rice)
Goad Pou

Isn’t it funny how we sometimes crave for the very dish we had dismissed as too boring or uninteresting in our childhood? It is indeed true that life’s greatest joys lie in simple pleasures. I wasn’t a big fan of the Goad Pou during my childhood. These days of course I do love to cook a variety of elaborate dishes but, this simple dish is all I long for when I prefer to just chill-out. The beaten-rice flakes coated with the flavour of fresh coconut and jaggery, transport me straight back home to Mangalore. This dish is the humble country cousin of the Theek-Pou.

How to make Goad Pou

This probably is the easiest dish to prepare. If you have all the ingredients prepped and ready, it is ready to serve in 5 minutes! Goad is the Konkani word for sweet and it also is the Konkani word for jaggery. Pou is the Konkani word for beaten-rice. Start by mixing together freshly grated coconut with the powdered jaggery, cardamom powder and salt. The moisture from the fresh coconut will help liquify the jaggery a bit. Add in the beaten rice and mix well until the rice flakes are coated with the colour of the jaggery. This will also help soften the rice flakes, making them easier to eat.

Although the moisture from the coconut and jaggery should suffice to soften the rice flakes, if you find them to be too dry, add about 1 tbsp of water and mix well. An optional addition would be a spoonful of granulated sugar. This is absolutely optional but recommended as it adds a crunchy texture to the dish. Traditionally Goad Pou is served with a perfectly ripe banana. This is an amazing combo! Some like to chop the banana and mix it into the dish, but I personally find it too messy. I prefer to bite into the banana with a mouthful of Goad Pou, while sipping on some piping hot Filter Coffee!

You can enjoy this for breakfast or at tea time in the evening. Give it a try and enjoy the trip down memory lane!
